Seminar Description:

Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, AI has rapidly moved from research labs into everyday applications—transforming search, communication, e-commerce, healthcare, and beyond. However, while consumer AI tools have seen widespread adoption, enterprises face unique challenges. For large organizations, the focus is not just on deploying AI, but on ensuring reliability, scalability, and measurable value in production environments.
This seminar defines what makes AI “enterprise-grade” and explores the technical areas where AI is making the biggest impact for businesses. We’ll dive into the engineering hurdles of productizing AI: from model selection and fine-tuning, to integration with legacy systems, to ensuring robustness, security, and compliance. Deploying AI in a commercial context requires more than state-of-the-art algorithms—it demands rigorous software engineering, DevOps practices, and a deep understanding of real-world constraints.

Abstract:

Evolving Fuzzy Systems (EFS) integrate concepts from Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems, combining their strengths to address complex and dynamic problems. Drift problems are associated with datasets whose underlying behavior changes over time, requiring adaptive modeling approaches. In this context, EFS provide suitable solutions for identifying and responding to such changes. This seminar will present the fundamental concepts of Evolving Fuzzy Systems and concept drift, supported by practical demonstrations using Python libraries, with the aim of offering students both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience.

Abstract:

Multifactor authentication (MFA) is one of the most important cyber security controls, topping most lists advocated by experts. While the security benefits may be substantial, less attention has been paid to the impact on users by the added friction introduced by the more stringent precautions. In this paper, we construct and analyze a dataset of authentication logs from a University population spanning two years. We focus on costs experienced by users: (1)
log-in failures and (2) the time spent away from IT applications following a failed authentication before attempting to re-authenticate. The second measure captures how user frustration can manifest by avoiding or delaying future engagement after experiencing failures. Following an exogenous change in MFA policy from a deny/approve mobile notification to a more cumbersome two-digit code mobile notification confirmation, we show that there are significant increases in the number of log-in failures and in time spent away following failures when using mobile MFA. We also briefly examine which types of users had the greatest difficulty adjusting to the more secure mobile MFA procedure.

Resumen:

This seminar provides an introduction to version 2 of the OMG Systems Modeling Language (SysML v2, see https://www.omg.org/spec/SysML). It covers the fundamental semantic concepts as well as practical use as a textual and graphical modelling language in support of model-based systems engineering (MBSE). Participants will learn how to start applying SysML v2 to the engineering of complex systems, illustrated with some examples from the space domain. SysML v2 was designed from the ground up as a major step forward from SysML v1. It has a formal semantics foundation and standardized, extensible model libraries. It also comes with a standardized API and Services part for fine-grained, tool-independent data access. SysML v2 is currently in the last stage of formal adoption by OMG and is expected to be released as an official specification in the summer of 2025. There are already a large number of initial implementations in MBSE tools.

Breve biografía:

Hans Peter de Koning is an independent consultant (DEKonsult, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) specializing in the advancement of digital engineering standards, methods and tools. He graduated with an M.Sc. in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology in 1984, after which he worked more than 40 years as an expert thermal, software and systems engineer. He worked mainly on space systems, first in industry and then more than 20 years at the European Space Agency (ESA). Up to retirement from ESA by the end of 2019, he led the development and application of MBSE methods, tools and standards for ESA’s Concurrent Design Facility (https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space_Engineering_Technology/CDF) and space projects in general. He’s been a main author or contributor on many ISO, ECSS (European Space) and OMG engineering standards. Currently, in addition to consultancy work, he is a core member of the team developing SysML version 2 at OMG.

Contemporary C++ - Bjarne Stroustrup

IMPORTANT NEWS: The recording is available (here).

Next March 25th 2025, Prof. Bjarne Stroustrup is visiting the Computer Science and Engineering Department at University Carlos III of Madrid. This is an excellent opportunity to attend a talk from the creator of the C++ programming language.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UC3M is proud to announce the following talk:

Tuesday, March 25th at 16:00: Contemporary C++.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please, note that registration is required as we have limited space.

Please if you are not coming, let us know and/or cancel your registration as some other person could use your seat.

CONTEMPORARY C++

By now, C++ is a language with a long history. This leads many people to overlook decades of progress and describe C++ as if today was still the second millennium where phones had to be plugged into the wall to function and most code was short, low-level, and slow.

Here, I present C++ as a coherent whole where strongly-typed generic programming has a central role, where code is presented as modules, resources are never leaked, and error-handling is systematic. Code written along these lines tend to be smaller, faster, more maintainable, and more reliable that code reflecting 20th century thinking. The features I present are ISO standard C++ and shipping in major compilers. This style of C++ is a logical development of the foundational principles from the earliest days.

For completeness, I will briefly mention the roots of the modern facilities presented, the key role of facilities for low-level code, and the essential role of stability/compatibility in long-term use of the language.

NOTE: This is an extended version of the talk that will be given at the using std::cpp 2025.

IEEE International Conference on Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent Systems 2024 (IEEE EAIS 2024)

Welcome to EAIS 2024 Madrid, Spain

The 2024 IEEE Conference on Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent Systems (IEEE EAIS 2024) was held in Madrid, located at the heart of Iberian Peninsula, is one of the most vibrant cities in Spain and its capital.

The conference series has a history starting in 2006 in Lake District (England). It was held after that in Witten-Bommerholz (Germany), Nashville (USA), Leicester (England), Paris (France), Madrid (Spain), Singapore, Linz (Austria), Douai (France), Natal (Brazil) and Ljubljana.

The creation of new, innovative, and original methods, algorithms, and implementations of systems with a high level of intelligence, that is, with a high level of flexibility and autonomy, poses a significant research problem that needs to be addressed in the field of intelligent systems. The field of Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent Systems, inspired by continuous and life-long learning, strives to attain systems that can adapt to the domain even after they are being designed. It has emerged to play a critical role for several real-world applications, especially the ones with high complexity and where dynamics change. IEEE EAIS 2024 will be a significant international forum with an emphasis on the discussion of recent developments, the exchange of recent innovations, and the identification of open, future challenges in this field.

This year’s conference was further enriched by a plenary talk delivered by Professor Plamen Angelov, which provided deep insights into the evolution and future directions of the evolving intelligent systems. In the conference we were delighted to present the Best Paper Award and the Best Student Paper Award, both sponsored by Evolving Systems, published by Springer. These awards recognize the top-ranked submissions to the conference in terms of general quality, originality, and timeliness.

During the conference, Dr. Edwin Lughofer (1972–2023) was recognized for his admirable work in the area of Evolving Systems. His contributions have significantly advanced the field, and we are deeply grateful for his dedication and innovation.

The conference was organized by the CAOS research group from the Department of Computer Science at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. It was sponsored by IEEE, the IEEE Systems, Man, & Cybernetics Society, and IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the International Program Committee members, the paper reviewers, and the Organizing Committee members for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the success of this event.

We are grateful to all participants for their invaluable contributions and look forward to ongoing advancements and collaborations in the field of evolving and adaptive intelligent systems.
